- Buy high efficiency high performance shower heads from ORF. Save up to $75 on your water bill annually. (We have wall mount and handheld models for $10 and $25, respectively — while supplies last – CONTACT US IF INTERESTED)
- Use water filters and buy less bottled water.
- Check your toilet for leaks. Put a little food coloring in your tank. If the color appears in the bowl within 30 minutes, you’ve got a leak. Most replacement parts are cheap and easy to install.
- Check for hidden household leaks. Read the house water meter before and after a 2-hour period when no water is being used. If the meter reads differently, you’ve got a leak.
- Choose native plants for your landscape. They typically require less maintenance and water.
- Use the dishwasher and clothes washer when they’re fully loaded. Choose Energy Star appliances that save water and money.
- Check to see if your lawn needs water before watering–most lawns need about 1” per week. Letting grass grow to 3” will allow the ground to retain more moisture.
- Early morning watering is best. Water close to plants’ roots where water is absorbed, rather than into the air where it evaporates.
- Use mulch around your plants to help retain ground moisture, but don’t create “volcanoes” around their bases – it can promote disease.
- Never put water down the drain when there could be another use for it. Use for houseplants.
** One more way…use a broom to clean debris off your walks and driveways instead of using water.
