Join Ohio River Foundation in the “Get Into Nature” gallery at the Cincinnati Museum Center on August 1st, 9th, and 17th from 11 am to 1 pm and learn about the wonders of native freshwater mussels, a rare and highly endangered animal group that lives right in our local waterways!
Ohio River Foundation will be on hand to share info about these miraculous creatures as well as to provide fun hands-on activities for kids of all ages to explore the wonders of the Ohio River Watershed.
Mussels are incredible and complex creatures that support the health of our local rivers and streams. They are filter feeders, which means they take water, and everything in the water, into their bodies via a siphon. Mussels take in the aquatic algae they eat and also pollutants in the water. What comes out of the mussels’ outgoing siphon is super-filtered clean water. They are like Brita filters living in our waterways. They can filter 10-20 gallons of water a day removing harmful algae, bacteria and even metals!
