Join Ohio River Foundation Aug. 24th at 11:30 am and 2:30 pm at the Cincinnati Museum Center on the Science stage for a presentation on native freshwater mussels, their conservation status, and what we can do to help protect them in the wild. PLUS meet and touch a live freshwater mussel!
This is a great opportunity to learn about the wonders of native freshwater mussels, a rare and highly endangered animal group that lives right in our local waterways!
Mussels are incredible and complex creatures that support the health of our local rivers and streams. They are filter feeders, which means they take water, and everything in the water, into their bodies via a siphon. Mussels take in the aquatic algae they eat and also pollutants in the water. What comes out of the mussels’ outgoing siphon is super-filtered clean water. They are like Brita filters living in our waterways. They can filter 10-20 gallons of water a day removing harmful algae, bacteria and even metals!
